Avner Eisenberg
Avner Eisenberg, better known as "Avener the Eccentric", has spent decades making audiences laugh until they cry, a talent which has not gone unnoticed by television and film directors. His most memorable role was in the Diamond of the Nile, starring alongside Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. He has acted in everything from Shakespeare to Beckett, but it is in his one-man mime shows that he feels most at home. Up on stage, he likes to confront life’s little difficulties. His stage persona owes much to the tradition of New York Jewish comedy (he never removes his bowler hat, even when the circumstances make this headwear highly impractical), and exists in constant conflict with inanimate objects.
Avner’s ongoing war with his props, one of the great traditions of mime, is enlivened by his exceptional gift for physical comedy. Ladders, brooms, cigarettes, sheets of paper, baseball bats, alarm clocks… so many potential obstacles, so many seemingly intractable problems which he overcomes in ways no sane person would imagine. Anybody who has witnessed Avner on stage will tell you: he belongs in the pantheon of great comic entertainers, alongside Chaplin and Raymond Devos.
