Pieter Ampe et Jakop Ampe
Who among us has never felt like wringing the neck of their brother or sister? And yet, we never actually go through with it. Because a brother or sister is a friend for life. A comrade who is never far away, somebody who can always be your “bridge over troubled water,” as Simon & Garfunkel so memorably put it.
The complex emotions which are an integral part of brotherhood form the focal point of this fanciful show presented by brothers
Jakob and Pieter Ampe. Pieter is a dancer and choreographer, Jakob a singer and musician. Under the watchful eye of Alain Platel, a leading figure in the contemporary Flemish dance world, the two brothers embark upon what they like to call “Jake and Pete’s big reconciliation attempt for the disputes from the past.”
They study one another intensely, each reflecting the other: the dancer discovers his voice, the singer gets to know his body. The ensuing situations and rhythms reveal a relationship where love and rivalry are never far apart. Each brother pushes the other to his limits; but if one of them ever looks life breaking or falling short, the other will always find a subtle way of coming to the rescue.
Combining elements of theatre, circus performance, dance and musical comedy, these two improbable characters craft a show, which escapes categorisations, shot through with irrepressible humour, examining the forces which bind them together and those which drive them apart.
