“L’Umaï”: femininity, matrix, the origin of the earth and the heavens... In front of a screen displaying images of the cosmos, before zooming in to the microbial level, a strange “nun” (a visitor from another solar system?) invokes ancestral legends, beginning with a song which seems to exist outside of time, soon embellished with subtle arabesque flourishes... Have you ever head of the dragon women of Gravbekistan, the legend of the Sylphides Umaï, the bizarre ritual of the Cubikoplastes? Accompanied by the entrancing musical compositions of long-time collaborator Karl Biscuit (responsible for the artistic concept, the stage direction and the videos), Marcia Barcellos explores various feminine mythologies in a phantasmagorical performance which leaves plenty of room for interpretation. More than just a technological tool, video plays a revelatory role in this show: the marriage of virtuality, musical dialects and gestural expression yields a moment of pure humanity. A whole artistic universe existing beyond the constraints of time and categories, a delicate utopia created in response to our world’s prevailing mood of desperation.
