On the stage, the lights gradually come up to reveal a block. From this monolith five strange characters emerge, half-man half-machine. They are here to tell a story spun from imagery, popular legends, hopes and dreams.
From the concrete jungle to a journey of discovery through a cinematic universe, Asphalte conjures with stereotypes in order to redefine their essential forms, in an approach inspired by Pop Art. As an integral element of the stage design, lighting is used to complement and contrast with the incredibly precise choreography of Pierre Rigal. His fascination with precision allows him to combine minimal movement and maximum clarity in a story which gradually grows into a breathless chase.
Leaving, running away, staying in one place - any place - dreaming hopelessly of elsewhere, imagining a different life… themes of searching and self which run through Asphalte. Armed with nothing more than humour, irony, grace and a poetic sensibility, this existential quest refuses to bend to familiar narrative structures, preferring to plunge directly into the heart of human dissatisfaction. Here, there, anywhere: you need to keep running if you don’t want to be left behind.
