Joan Catala first entered the art world in 1994, enrolling at the La Llotja Institute of Applied Arts. Between 1999 and 2005 he worked with various circus schools including Caramps in Madrid, Rogelio Rivel in Barcelona and the Moscow National Circus School, specialising in ensemble acrobatics.
Joan also underwent training in contemporary dance, physical theatre and clowning, studying under professionals such as Mal Pelo, Michel Dellaire, Iñaki Azpillaga, Àngels Margarit, Thomas Hauert and David Zambrano.
Since 2005 he has taken to the stage at theatres and festivals all over the world, with companies such as Daraomai, Circus Klezmer, Los 2Play and Mudances-Angels Margarit.
Joan also collaborated with Eulàlia Ayguadé on the show Little Me, presented at the Festival du Saumon 2012, as well as working with Iris Heitzinger at various phases of the process of research and reflection that culminated in to the creation of Caída Libre in 2013. He also worked on Alex Pachon’s short film Tu retomberas, a prize winner at the 2015 Fiver International Festival.
In 2012, Joan began to develop his own unique vision of a theatrical art inspired by urban landscape and the streets. The resulting show, Pelat, was premiered in 2013.
