Boustrophedon is an ongoing exploration of the circus arts and puppetry, expressed though performances which take a humorous look at serious subjects, and cast an indulgent eye over mankind’s foibles. No two shows are ever the same: it’s important to open yourself up to the power of the unexpected.
All members of the company contribute on an even footing to the creation of each new show. The writing is inspired by the performer’s technical prowess, the dreams which drive them and their unique vision of the world. The director’s inner vision channels his or her deep respect for the artists on stage. This is a resolutely collective creative process, whose watchwords are precision, meaning and simplicity. These performances are never the work of any one person, nor of an autonomous group: they are the fruit of a constantly-shifting, joyous (im)balance. The over-arching theme which links these disparate performances could perhaps best be expressed as “Is there a limit beyond which human nature breaks down?” Monstrosities, war and infirmity, old age and imprisonment are all forces which oblige us to ask certain questions about human nature, coming to terms with our personal histories and their inevitable blend of heroism and cowardice, appreciating anew the values of solidarity, empathy and community. Without concessions, but with clemency. And unflinching humour.
Naturally, the members of the company are enthusiastic believers in the importance of education and sharing their artistic values.
