Mitsuyo Uesugi
She has since gone on to become a prominent international artist, working in Japan, the USA and France (including a spell as a member of the company led by Catherine Diverres and Bernardo Montet).
She approaches the composition of her solo shows like a painter, conjuring up bold new images with her body.
Elle is a performance which spans two contrasting ages: the character starts out as an elderly woman, and in the second half becomes a young girl. In the process, Uesugi invokes the spirit of a long line of women, living and deceased: “the women who have provided spiritual nourishment throughout my life”. A remarkable study in metamorphosis from a peerless physical poet.
