Gohei Zaitsu
Exploring the depths of the ‘self’ in order to establish a strange and ineffable sense of intimacy with fellow ‘selves’.
The crystalline click of drops of water hitting the ground is the only sound to break the immaculate silence of Gyohei Zaitsu. A musclebound, harmonious and marvellously self-controlled body slowly, gradually unfurls from the floor in a long upwards spiral, returning to its starting place a whole hour later.
Austere though it may seem at first sight, this show in fact exerts a powerful grip over the audience, thanks as much to the power of the performance as the wealth of associations it throws up.
Gyohei Zaitsu is on a quest to open both body and mind, breaking free of social codes to achieve self-oblivion and absolute union with the cosmos.
