Teatro Necessario

A show balanced precariously on a razor’s edge, propelled by a trio of Italian artists overflowing with comic talent… Three apprentice barbers take centre stage in a show packed with energy, absurdity and inventive spirit.

Three apprentice barbers, maestri of all things hirsute, are convinced that they have the skills and the lotions to solve any and all capillary woes. They proudly show off their talents, but the customers still don’t seem to come…

Nuova Barberia Carloni plunges the audience into the rarefied atmosphere of an old-fashioned barber’s shop, a pillar of social life in the community. Customers drop in for a haircut or shave, but also to discuss business and share opinions. And of course there’s always the music, the coffee and the endless anecdotes of the barber, a confidant to so many of his clients. The crazy Italian artistes of Teatro Necessario go to great lengths to pull in the punters. They serve drinks, entertain the impatient customers with their endless jokes and musical numbers, listen to their woes and, of course, shave chins and cut hair. Mixing acrobatics, live music (double bass, recorders and trumpets), burlesque tomfoolery and startling technical precision, the three would-be barbers serve up an energetic, unexpected and endlessly inventive treat.

Much of the show revolves around the notion of Waiting. The barbers waiting for customers, and killing time with all manner of outlandish demonstrations of their blade skills. The audience waiting for something terrible to happen, which often seems the most likely outcome. And the uneasiness which lurks beneath all this waiting, a profound crisis of identity.
